Database Issues - Firebird

SAM DJ includes the Firebird database system to manage the tracks but occasionally, you might experience issues with the database.  If SAM DJ appears to hang when starting, or fails to load then this can be an indication of a database issue.  Not all database issues are the same but here are some suggested remedies to resolve the most common problems:

Unable to Connect to Database

If you experience this issue, then you should ensure the database services are running. To do this, press the Windows key and R together to bring up the Run box, enter 'services.msc' in the Run box and click OK.

You should ensure the two Firebird services (Firebird Guardian and Firebird Server) are running and if they are not, double-click each service in turn, ensure the startup type is set to Automatic and click Start.

Database Not Running

This error message usually relates to a problem with the database and you should again ensure the database services are running.

Database Repair

If your EventLog contains errors related to database tables then you might need to repair your database.  This may happen for a variety of reasons but most commonly if your system loses power before you can save any changes.

To repair your Firebird database, please follow the instructions in this article:

Create a New Database

If you are unable to repair your database or would like to create a new database then you could follow these instructions but unfortunately, this also means you will have to reload all your music.

To do this, please follow these steps:

1. From your Start menu, click All Programs->SAM DJ->Utils->Data path. This will open the SAM DJ data path folder

2. Open the ".\SAMDB" folder

3. Rename \"SAMDB.FDB\" as \"SAMDB-broken.FDB\"

4. Start SAM DJ

Database Backup

We recommend creating regular back ups of your database to avoid having to set up your music library all over again. To back up your database simply click Tools -> Backup. Back-ups are then stored in the data path under the ".\backup" folder.
